Welcome to the BAME Planners Network
The BAME Planners Network is a growing initiative committed
to promoting diversity and inclusion within the planning
profession across the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Who We Are
We are a welcoming and supportive network for planners from diverse ethnic backgrounds. Our members include professionals at all stages of their careers, from students and recent graduates to senior planners and consultants. The network exists to offer a safe space for engagement, collaboration, and support – not only for BAME professionals, but also for allies and organisations who share our vision of a more inclusive profession. We are not affiliated with any political group or planning body, and basic membership is completely free.
Our Aims
Our aim is to raise the visibility and profile of BAME planners across the UK and Ireland. Therefore, encourage more individuals from minority backgrounds to consider and enter the planning profession. We provide practical support to help BAME professionals achieve their career and consultancy goals. We also work to empower BAME communities to influence planning in their local areas. By collaborating with organisations, we promote better understanding and improved policies around equality, diversity, and inclusion.
Awareness
Enhance the recognition and visibility of BAME Planners who are making significant contributions within the planning profession. It is essential to celebrate their achievements and ensure their voices are heard in shaping our communities.
Encouragement
Inspire and empower individuals from BAME backgrounds to pursue careers in the planning profession across all levels, fostering a diverse and inclusive environment that enriches our communities and enhances the effectiveness of urban development.
Support
Supporting BAME Planners to achieve their career and consultancy aspirations while unlocking their full potential within the Planning profession. We provide essential practical support through our dedicated network.
Communities
Empowering and uplifting the BAME communities to actively shape and influence the planning processes in their local areas, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are met.
Our Acheivements
Since launching in 2020, the Network has made significant progress. We conducted the UK’s first Diversity and Inclusion Workplace survey specific to the planning profession. We’ve responded to key government proposals, including the Planning White Paper, and held discussions with the Chief Planner at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities. We’ve worked with over 15 organisations to support improvements in their EDI practices, and we’ve hosted 10 free events with more than 500 participants.
Get Involved
Join The Network
Whether you’re a student, a seasoned professional, or an organisation looking to do better, we invite you to get involved. By joining the network, you’ll be part of a movement that’s committed to fairness, representation, and opportunity for all
Make a More Inclusive Future
There are many ways to participate – from attending events and sharing your story, to mentoring, contributing to our work, or simply spreading the word. Together, we can shape a more inclusive future for the planning profession.
"I had lost faith but this network has reversed that. I have in my 15 years in planning only worked with 3 BAME planners all at senior or planner level but never in management. This network is truly an eye-opener and source of motivation."
